A population-based analysis of national mortality data in England from 2001 to 2024 found a substantial reduction in cervical cancer mortality among women aged 20-29 that was associated with high uptake of the national HPV vaccination program, published in The Lancet (DOI 10.1016/S0140-6736(26)00918-9). England began routine HPV vaccination of girls in 2008; this study tracked cervical cancer death rates over more than two decades to assess the vaccination program’s real-world, population-level impact on mortality (as distinct from earlier studies that tracked precancerous lesions or cancer incidence rather than deaths). This is an observational, population-level mortality-trend analysis, not a randomized controlled trial — it identifies a strong association between vaccination-program timing/uptake and falling mortality, consistent with a substantial body of separate evidence (including randomized-trial-adjacent registry data on HPV infection and precancerous lesions) that HPV vaccination causes reduced HPV-related cancer risk, but this specific analysis design cannot on its own rule out other contributing factors (e.g. improved screening, treatment advances) over the same 23-year period.
