AI lasers may help detect breast cancer very early

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have developed a groundbreaking method that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced laser analysis to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage. This technique utilizes Raman spectroscopy, where laser light interacts with blood plasma to identify subtle biochemical changes indicative of cancer. In a pilot study involving 24 blood samples—half from breast cancer patients and half from healthy individuals—the AI-enhanced system achieved a remarkable 98% accuracy in identifying stage 1a breast cancers. Additionally, it demonstrated a 90% success rate in distinguishing among the four major subtypes of breast cancer, which is crucial for tailoring personalized treatment plans.

The implications of this technology extend beyond breast cancer detection. Lead researcher Andy Downes suggests that this approach could be adapted for early identification of various cancer types by expanding the database of blood sample analyses. Early detection significantly enhances treatment outcomes and survival rates, as most cancer-related deaths occur when the disease is diagnosed at advanced stages.
