Healthy habits could help cancer survivors live longer, new study finds

​Recent research from the American Cancer Society indicates that adopting healthy lifestyle habits can significantly extend the lives of cancer survivors. The study focused on survivors of obesity-related cancers and found that those adhering to guidelines such as maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, consuming a nutritious diet, and limiting alcohol intake had a 24% lower risk of death from any cause. Notably, these individuals also experienced a 33% reduction in heart disease mortality and a 21% decrease in cancer-related deaths. ​

The research analyzed data from nearly 3,750 non-smoking cancer survivors diagnosed between 1992 and 2002, tracking their health over an average of 15.6 years. Findings suggest that even survivors who adopted healthier habits post-diagnosis reaped significant benefits. This underscores the importance of lifestyle modifications in enhancing survival rates among cancer survivors.
