A new clinical trial is investigating the use of steam-based therapy as a less invasive treatment for prostate cancer. The Vanquish Water Vapor Ablation System delivers a 10-second burst of steam directly into the prostate tumor via a catheter inserted through the urethra. This localized application of heat aims to destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day and resume normal activities shortly thereafter.
The ongoing trial involves approximately 400 male participants over the age of 50 with stage 2 or lower prostate cancer that has not metastasized. To date, over 180 patients have undergone the treatment. Researchers will monitor participants over a five-year period to assess disease progression and evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of this steam-based approach. If successful, this method could offer a viable alternative to traditional treatments like surgery and radiation, which often come with significant side effects such as incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
