What supplements help with cancer prevention?

Recent research has highlighted the potential role of certain dietary supplements in cancer prevention. Vitamin D, often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin,” is essential for regulating cell growth and maintaining immune function. Studies have found that individuals with higher blood levels of vitamin D have a lower risk of colorectal cancer. This protective effect is believed to stem from vitamin D’s ability to control inflammation and prevent cells from becoming cancerous. For adults, a daily intake of 1,000–2,000 IU of vitamin D is generally considered safe and may be beneficial, especially for those with limited sun exposure.

Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish oil supplements, possess anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce the risk of cancers associated with chronic inflammation, such as breast and prostate cancers. Research indicates that higher consumption of omega-3s correlates with a decreased incidence of certain cancers. While consuming fatty fish like salmon is an excellent way to obtain these nutrients, supplements can serve as an alternative for individuals who do not regularly include fish in their diets.
